Immigration And Incentives, Redux

Posted: August 27, 2015
By: Steve Soukup

The American people have told pollsters over and over again that they support a wall, a fence, or some sort of border barrier to restrict illegal immigration. They also support deporting illegal immigrants who are convicted of committing felonies. All of this is, or at least could be, consistent with the Bishops’ letter and the Catholic Catechism. Unfortunately, nobody in either party ever offered such a solution… Read

Dating And Commitment In The 21st Century

Posted: August 25, 2015
By: Frank J. Moncher, Ph.D.

Per the Daily Telegraph “the lines of what constitutes a relationship are now completely blurred…. Young people today are brilliantly liberated because they have so much freedom, but also incredibly oppressed because that means they have to find their own rules and they’re confused.” Online dating? “[I]t’s like ordering…food, but you’re ordering a person.” Can anything good come from this? The Beginning Of Life: Part 2

Posted: August 20, 2015
By: Dr. Pilar Calva, M.D.

In the unity of life’s development there is no “threshold” after which something that was not yet human becomes human. Science leads us to affirm that if it was not human from the beginning, it would never become so. Therefore, we must cast out any temptation to establish a “before” and “after.” There is no leap, no transformation in essence, by which the zygote, embryo or fetus becomes at some moment of its development something that it wasn’t from its conception. Facebook And The Intellectual High-Ground

Posted: August 18, 2015
By: Steve Soukup

Visit the Culture of Life’s Facebook page, and you will see that our briefs, especially those dealing with abortion, receive many reader comments, perhaps a majority of which are negative – some virulently so. Most, though not all, of those negative comments are also surprisingly shallow and simplistic. They are emotional, not logical. So what does it mean for the Pro-Life movement when its opponents cede the intellectual high-ground? Read

The Beginning Of Life: Part 1

Posted: August 13, 2015
By: Dr. Pilar Calva, M.D.

How do we know that a person exists upon conception? Science, of course. In Part 1 of a two-part series, Dr. Calva reviews how molecular biology shows us that every living being has a genome specific to its species. The human genome is what makes us human, and it exists upon conception, after which nothing other than a person, and only that particular person, can possibly result. Read

Talking About Death: Medical Care Or Breaking An Unspoken Covenant?

Posted: August 11, 2015
By: Frank J. Moncher, Ph.D.

The Hippocratic Oath’s decree to “do no harm” is increasingly running head long into distorted notions of dignity and choice. As efforts at cost control push doctors to address end-of-life decisions with patients, some rightfully fear the direction of those discussions–going so far as to warn that doctors becoming involved in the terminating of life portends the end of medicine as we know it. Jenner’s “Courage” – Three Ways Wrong

Posted: August 6, 2015
By: Frank J. Moncher, Ph.D.

On July 15, Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS and urged acceptance for others who are transgender, receiving a standing ovation from some of the sporting world’s biggest stars. Amid the public spectacle that has captured the media’s attention these past few months, an important question must be asked: Does it take courage to do the wrong thing? Read

Is Pro-Life, Pro-Woman Legislation Reducing The Number Of Abortions?

Posted: August 4, 2015
By: Pilar Vazquez, Esq., Shawn Sheehey, J.D.

It was recently reported that abortions in the United States are declining. Some argue that this reduction is because of the greater accessibility of contraception. However, recent data from the state of Texas is producing solid evidence that legislation aimed at protecting human life and the health and safety of women has a significant impact. Read

Do The Videos Matter?

Posted: July 29, 2015
By: Steve Soukup

For years now, whenever a Pro-Life politician says or does something impolitic, the entirety of the Pro-Life movement is made to answer for it. By contrast, it seems, the Pro-Choice movement has largely been immune from this collective guilt. But with the vile and horrifying statements made by Planned Parenthood officials now a part of the public consciousness, Pro-Life politicians are once again on offense. Read

Should Abortion Clinics be Held to Basic Surgical Center Regulations?

Posted: July 28, 2015
By: Margaret Datiles Watts, J.D.

Sterilized instruments. Operating rooms cleaned before each operation. Surgeries performed only by physicians licensed to perform such surgeries…. Are medically-based regulations an “undue burden” on a woman’s right to abortion or are they appropriate protections due to any patient? Based upon a challenge to such regulations in Texas, the Supreme Court may soon choose to decide.
